Struggle for stars in the spotlight at Wentworth

Sergio Garcia looked far from his best on the early holes of his first round since having to apologise to Tiger Woods for his “fried chicken” insult.

The Spaniard was among the late starters at the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth today. He slipped to one over after three holes but birdies on the next two took him to one under after five.

Taylor Made, Garcia’s equipment supplier which is owned by adidas, are considering taking action.

A statement said: “His comments are clearly out of bounds and we are continuing to review the matter.”

The fallout between Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell appeared to take its toll on the pair today.

They locked horns over McIlroy’s decision to leave management group Horizon, forcing the 24-year-old to say: “He’s maybe said a few things I wasn’t happy with but we had a chat and all is okay.”

The duo were paired together for the first two rounds at Wentworth and looked at pains to show the damage had been repaired.

But they arrived back in the clubhouse well behind the leader, Mikko Illonen, of Finland, who came through stormy conditions to card a five-under 67. McIlroy and McDowell both posted two-over rounds of 74.
