Formula E: Lucas De Grassi back in front after California

Lucas di Grassi made up for the disappointment of his disqualification in Mexico in the previous round by winning last weekend’s Faraday Future Long Beach ePrix in California.

Three weeks ago the Abt Schaeffler Audi Sport driver had crossed the line first, only for his first car to be judged to be underweight, leading to his exclusion.

But the Brazilian produced a drive of genuine quality to win and put himself a point clear of Sébastien Buemi in the 2016 FIA Formula E driver Standings.

“I’m very happy to show that if you keep your focus, keep up your work, good results come,” said di Grassi after he had won.

“From the outside, races always look comfortable. This is a tricky track, it’s very easy to make mistakes, and it was an extremely difficult race. Stéphane [Sarrazin] was quick and was putting pressure on me. It’s an extremely difficult car to drive on the edge so it was not a comfortable win — we just had to focus on not making mistakes.”

Di Grassi pulled past DS Virgin Racing’s Sam Bird, who was on pole position, early in the race and his only opposition then came from Venturi’s Sarrazin, who had a chance of victory when the safety car was deployed following a crash by Nelson Piquet Jr.

But di Grassi timed his restart to perfection and cruised home for his second win of the year.

The series now heads back to Europe for the inaugural Visa Paris ePrix, which takes place on April 23.
