'We don't need a 50metre pool like Sydney or Athens. We need between 15-20,000 seats around an Olympic pool.'
To do this, the bid committee could use existing facilities such as the Dome or Earls Court for the swimming and Trafalgar Square or Hyde Park for diving. Such a plan would please those IOC members who are concerned at the desire to locate London's Olympic facilities solely in the East End.
Senior IOC member Alex Gilady, a vice-president of America's NBC TV channel, has said that if London won the bid they would want some of the Games held in parts of the capital 'we would recognise'.
The temporary plan would fit in with the IOC's vision of future Olympic cities as IOC president Jacques Rogge said last month that he wants to downsize the Games.
