Oakham's final dream comes true

We knew it would take a special team to prise the Daily Mail Under 18 Cup away from Campion and Oakham proved just that in a spectacular first-half performance at Twickenham yesterday. Oakham's high-speed, high-quality game ripped through the holders' famous defence and there were stunning tries from Paul Cook, Matthew Cornwell, Joe Wheeler and skipper Gray Cullen.

But Oakham continued their habit of being Dr Jekyll in the first half and Mr Hyde in the second, and Campion's young team thought they had one hand back on the cup during a memorable fightback which fell one score short and left Oakham hanging on at 28-23.

There was to be no fairy-tale ending to Outwood Grange's magical run in the Under 15 Cup. The rugby league school from Wakefield ran into one of the most impressive and organised young sides seen at Twickenham in county rivals St Peter's, York. They dominated proceedings from the first whistle and were comfortably in control until Outward centre James Endersby scored after a run from the halfway line just as he had done in the semi-final.
