Tottenham's future at White Hart Lane has sparked a row between candidates going into today's General Election.

With the club openly discussing moves to either Wembley or the proposed Olympic Stadium in Stratford, Tottenham MP David Lammy today insisted it is "vital" for them to remain in Haringey.

Spurs have drawn up plans for a major redevelopment of their ground, including a capacity hike to 48,000 and a new retail and leisure complex on Tottenham High Road.

However, they will only go ahead with the scheme if there are key transport improvements, ideally including an extension of the Tube's Victoria Line.

So far, the authorities - Haringey Council, the London Development Agency and Transport for London - have given little indication that the improvements will be made and Spurs are considering alternatives.

Wayne Hoban, the Liberal Democrat candidate for Tottenham, said: "It would be a sad day for Tottenham if the club were to leave. We need to keep them here and to do that means lobbying government at national and local level.
