New Twenty20 vision must be clear

"For instance, there is talk of expanding the group stages into two bigger leagues, split north/south or east/west, but that could mean us travelling to Durham for a three-hour match.

"I believe we must think very carefully before we simply put more pressure on the players."

Besides a winners' cheque of £42,000, the competition has netted Surrey £70,000 in extra profit. The only disappointment for the club, following group stage crowds of 10,000 at The Oval and a capacity 3,500 at the new venue of Imber Court in Esher, was that a mere 500 members bought advance tickets to travel to Nottingham on Saturday. This was well below the support enjoyed by other semi-finalists Warwickshire, Gloucestershire and Leicestershire in a sell-out 15,000 Trent Bridge crowd.

Surrey fast bowler Jimmy Ormond, meanwhile, underlined his England comeback claims with a brilliant new-ball spell of four for 11 as Warwickshire were dismissed for just 115.

Ian Ward, who had earlier scored an important semi-final 49, then thumped 50 from 26 balls as he and opening partner Alistair Brown (55 not out from 34 balls) put on 100 in less than 10 overs.

Surrey skipper Hollioake said: "They both batted fantastically, but the players who made the real difference on the day were Ormond and Azhar Mahmood. They fully deserved to take the two man-of-the-match awards, and Azhar has been the best all-rounder in the competition.

"Jimmy hits the pitch hard, and that's why he got more out of it than any other bowler. He's very strong and worked hard on his fitness last winter. He's a much more consistent bowler now than when he played his two Tests in 2001."

Ormond himself is still desperate to win another England chance, while Surrey are now on course for a domestic treble.
