Myers points to a painful decision

Bexley captain Gary Myers faces a selection dilemma he could do without as the club prepare for their biggest game of the season this weekend.

The Kent League side will book a trip to The Oval next month for the final of club cricket's premier knockout tournament if they safely negotiate their Evening Standard Challenge Trophy semi-final at Radlett on Sunday.

The Bexley captain's dilemma surrounds the fitness of one player - himself. Myers, 32, has a broken finger and will make a late decision after testing out the injury. The left-handed batsman said: "I'm very conscious that I mustn't let anyone down. This is a massive game for the club and I'm desperate to play but I must be honest with myself.

"It's very painful at the moment but batting shouldn't be a problem. Fielding is the worry."

Andrew Tutt, Bexley's official vice-captain, is already ruled out with a back problem but Myers has every confidence in his deputy for Sunday's semi-final, Min Patel. He has played for England, after all. The left-arm spinner, who won two Test caps in 1996, turns out regularly for Bexley when not required by Kent.

He will open the batting at Radlett along with former Kent batsman James Hockley as Bexley attempt to reach their third Challenge Trophy final. They were runners up at The Oval in 1996 and 2001. James Golding, a former Kent pace bowler, was their quarter-final match-winner against BWIA Cavaliers with figures of five for 25, including four wickets in four overs.

Radlett have collected the scalps of Teddington and Wimbledon en route to their first semi-final. Their bowling attack is spearheaded by Kervin Marc, who played for Middlesex in the mid-Nineties. The other semi-final is between Enfield, from Division Two of the Middlesex League, and Lordswood, from the outskirts of Chatham in Kent.

Lordswood will look to fast-bowling grandfather Kevin Masters for inspiration again. The 42-year-old made light of his years in the quarter final at Finchley with four wickets for 18 runs in an aggressive spell.
