Pools of water were on the Nursery at Lord's last week and the groundstaff were unable to get out on the main square. The spokesman added: "The water table is so high that it's being topped up every time it rains.
"It's a dire situation. Grounds around the country are in the same position."
One of the problems is that the season, which should be one of the highlights of the decade with Australia and Pakistan touring, is due to start earlier than usual because of the heavy schedule.
Last season went on until mid-September, which held up the renovation work on the squares.
By the time the staff were ready to make up time, the rain started tumbling down. It has hardly stopped for seven months. At Lord's they cannot even get out the covers to the middle because there is nothing dry to cover.
The water keeps coming up from the ground, leaving a soaked, grassy rectangle almost indistinguishable from the outfield.
Now Lord's officials are investigating the use of portable pitches.
Hunt and Tony Dodemaide, Maryle-bone Cricket Club's head of cricket, have already inspected some being used in Auckland, Christchurch, Sydney and Melbourne.
The specially-prepared strips are lifted into the ground and taken out afterwards, allowing the grounds to be used for rugby, football and pop concerts.
