Moves that sparked fan fury

Much of Tottenham High Road was cordoned off as mounted police and officers in riot gear combined to keep some 2,000 furious Spurs fans away from the Arsenal coach arriving at White Hart Lane last November. Beer cans were thrown and children even held up balloons bearing the name 'Judas'. Campbell held his nerve throughout a bad-tempered 1-1 draw, his every touch jeered.

Luis Figo, Barcelona - Real Madrid (£37m) July 2000

Figo returned to the Nou Camp in October 2000 as the world's most expensive player - and Catalonia's most-hated deserter. The city's police were on full alert, surrounding him as he arrived at the airport. The local tabloids greeted Figo with a 10-page special on the background to La Traicion - The Betrayal.
Fans began staking out the area surrounding the stadium 12 hours before the game - and during it a clearly anxious Figo underperformed. He said he felt like a "wanted murderer?.

Nicky Barmby, Everton - Liverpool (£6m) July 2000

Barmby scored in the Anfield derby in October 2000 which Liverpool won 3-1, further angering Everton fans after his move across Stanley Park. He was said to be injured for both Goodison games during his two seasons at Liverpool.

Eric Cantona, Leeds - Man Utd (£1.2m) November 1992

The Frenchman's return to Elland Road was predictably hostile and ended with one Leeds fan complaining Cantona had spat at him. West Yorkshire police took no action. Happily for Leeds, Cantona, whose every touch was met with a barrage of abuse, missed a hatful of chances for his new team in a 0-0 draw. He also received a late caution for hacking down Jon Newsome.

Mo Johnston, Nantes - Rangers (£1.5m) July 1989

Johnston's first problem was overcoming his new team's 'fans' who were horrified at the arrival of a former Celtic hero. He had agreed to rejoin Celtic only days before signing for Graeme Souness at Ibrox. The Rangers hierarchy offered him the chance to avoid the short trip to Parkhead in August 1989 but he decided to play. His reception was as hot as a fireside poker and, clearly put off his game, Johnston missed a couple of good chances in a 1-1 draw.
