Morris turns a deaf ear to protests

"It was my first penalty outside training and it wasn't planned at all. Maybe I'll keep the job now!"

Morris was lectured by referee Tony Leake for his over- zealous celebration but the official is unlikely to mention it in his report.

Even so, it was unwise for Morris to increase the temperature at an encounter that was always likely to explode on and off the pitch.

Leake booked seven players in a game where late tackles were an occupational hazard. And following skirmishes between the fans inside the ground, there were fights outside with police caught in the middle.

West Yorkshire Police made 10 arrests for public order offences and criminal damage, with the detainees from both the local and London areas.

And Millwall fans rang local London radio stations in the aftermath to claim two of their coaches had been attacked and had windows broken.

Millwall, whose hard-earned point lifted them to ninth in the table, were below their best in the first half but still should have taken the lead when Paul Ifill's shot was parried by former Tottenham and Chelsea goalkeeper Neil Sullivan and Barry Hayles prodded the rebound wide.

Instead, it was Leeds who went ahead in almost comical fashion with virtually the last kick of the first half. Darren Ward's attempted clearance struck team-mate Peter Sweeney standing just a few yards away and Leeds winger Jermaine Wright took full advantage to release David Healy.

His pass to John Oster was controlled well by the Welsh international whose finish hit the back of the net despite a last-ditch attempt to clear by

Ward.

Morris had a second-half effort tipped around the post by Sullivan but Lions goalke eper Andy Marshall kept his side in the contest with a brilliant reflex stop to deny Healy after a swift break.

The 85th-minute arrival of Adrian Serioux gave Millwall the extra option of his phenomenal long throw and it paid dividends within 60 seconds.

Serioux launched the ball into the penalty area from the right and Oster and Gary Kelly combined to upend Ifill.

Morris was surprisingly given the responsibility and thumped his penalty high to Sullivan's left.

"It took guts and bottle for him to take that," said Millwall boss Dennis Wise. "We are not a million miles away as a team and we all feel the play-offs are realistic."
