McSorley proud to lead Britain

After almost two weeks of talks with Anschutz Sports Holdings, owners of the London Knights, Canadian Chris McSorley has finally confirmed he will coach the Great Britain ice hockey team.

McSorley is thrilled to have been given a three-year contract, which will hopefully see him lead Britain to the 2002 Winter Olympic Games.

The 38-year-old from Hamilton, Ontario said: "I'm very pleased to be the person selected by Ice Hockey UK for such an important position.

"I'm also grateful for the support of the London Knights for giving me the opportunity. It's a large task but I'll do it to the best of my ability."

McSorley takes the job on a part-time basis, starting immediately, but will see out the remainder of his contract with the Knights.

His first game in charge of the national team comes next April when Britain take on Slovenia.

Meanwhile, McSorley's club team return to the London Arena after four weeks on the road.

The Evening Standard-sponsored Knights face a crucial weekend starting tomorrow with their Benson & Hedges Cup semi-final second leg tie against Newcastle Jesters.

London have a one goal deficit to make up after a hat-trick from Matt Oates inspired Newcastle to a 3-2 win in last week's first leg.

However. Knights gained revenge for that defeat in a league game earlier this week - edging past the Jesters on penalty shots. On Sunday the Knights return to Sekonda Superleague action when they play hosts to leaders Sheffield Steelers.

Since their last home game - a 6-2 win over Newcastle on 15 October - Knights have won three and lost three of their six away games.

In the meantime, their Docklands home has been busy hosting events like the Tarzan on Ice show and a Robbie Williams concert.
