And Mutawaqed caught the eye again in Halmahera's Portland Handicap at Doncaster last week, travelling sweetly under restraint then running on well for ninth having been badly chopped for room as the winner switched across him at a crucial stage.
Clearly, the improving Prince Aaron represents a big danger given his rapid improvement this season, while Quito powered home to win this race last year and has to be respected even though he is much higher in the
weights after an interrupted preparation.
The unexposed Philharmonic is worth a saver at a big price on his return from a break, but Mutawaqed will have the strong gallop which suits him and looks a value each-way bet.
Newbury racegoers will be spoiled for choice tomorrow, with the Dubai Duty Free Mill Reef Stakes backed up by a £100,000 handicap and a cracking Group 3 sprint.
Salsa Brava and Andronikos look certain to corner a large slice of the Mill Reef market after finishing second in good races at York last time, but don't be at all surprised if Galeota proves the best bet.
Richard Hannon's colt finished just behind Andronikos in the Gimcrack Stakes at York and then went on to be beaten fair and square in the Sirenia Stakes at Kempton.
However, Hannon is well known for coaxing improvement from his juveniles. Galeota clearly progressed to clock a useful time when winning a minor event at Doncaster last weekend and this under-rated colt looks well worth a little each-way support back in this higher grade.
Channel 4 will also be covering the Curragh tomorrow, where the evergreen Vinnie Roe is the star attraction as he bids to land the Irish Field St Leger for the fourth year running.
Dermot Weld's old warrior has been beaten twice this season, and some punters will come down in favour of last year's St Leger winner Brian Boru and the recent York winner First Charter as a result.
However, these are early days to be suggesting that Vinnie Roe isn't the horse he used to be.
Indeed, Vinnie Roe looked as good as ever when trying to give weight and a start to some smart rivals in a Listed race at Leopardstown last time out.
He finished with a real flourish that day and this return to a mile and three quarters will suit him ideally as he bids to cement his place in history.
