Matilda's not on Dallaglio's party hit list

Lawrence Dallaglio could not resist taking a swipe at the Australians today as he spoke of his pride at England's World Cup-winning success.

Asked what sort of songs the players had sung in the bars and clubs of Sydney in the aftermath of Saturday's momentous victory, the London Wasps captain replied: "Well, there wasn't too much 'Waltzing Matilda', I can tell you!"

The former England captain also said the constant rubbishing of Clive Woodward's team in the Australian media had backfired on the Aussies.

He said: "I suppose you can accept the stuff that comes from outside the Australian team camp, but when it starts coming from some of their players then it is not on.

"But it only served to throw fuel on the fire of an already highly motivated bunch of England players. All the crap we took was largely down to their insecurity, but also because we were such a threat. And we were such a threat that we won the tournament.

"To have won the World Cup by beating Australia in Australia makes it even more satisfying. But at least the Australian papers were good enough to print a full-page apology to us the day after the final, so most of it was all tongue in cheek stuff."
