Mallett's hint to Quins

Former Springboks coach Nick Mallett last night declared an interest in the job of reviving Harlequins and ending his 20-year exile from English rugby.

As the London club prepared to put him on top of their short-list for the vacancy left by Zinzan Brooke's departure, Mallett interrupted a New Year holiday to reveal that he is open to offers. 'I'm very interested in talking to anyone about a coaching job in England,' he said.

'Harlequins are a famous club but there has been no approach. 'While I am in no rush, I do have a young family to consider.'

Similarly, Quins chief executive Mark Evans was also prepared to wait before reaching a decision but Mallett's reaction has made him a leading contender.

'He is a quality coach with a proven track record,' said Evans. 'If he is available at the right price he would be a strong candidate. Nobody has been lined up but we've had two applications.'

Mallett, 44, who played for Richmond in 1980, was forced to resign as South Africa coach last September despite equalling the world record of 17 consecutive Test wins.

He was interviewed by the RFU earlier this season for the job of performance director.
