Make-or-break for trial stars

This weekend's Norwich Union Olympic Trials & AAA Championships will make or break the Athens ambitions of many of our leading athletes. The target in Manchester is straightforward: finish in the top two and, assuming the athlete has met the qualifying standard below, he or she is guaranteed a place in the team named on Tuesday. No more than three can be selected in any one event.

Men's 100m (10.21sec)

Tomorrow's blue riband event with four major contenders for three places. World bronze medallist Darren Campbell, world indoor champion Jason Gardener and former world junior champion Mark Lewis-Francis will face competition from Scotland's Nick Smith, who still needs the qualifying standard.

Men's 200m (20.59)

The final event on Sunday and probably the most hotly contested: six athletes are in with a shout. Campbell and Christian Malcolm will be favourites but Chris Lambert, Marlon Devonish, Dwayne Grant and Julian Golding represent tough obstacles.

Men's 400m (45.55)

Welsh prospect Tim Benjamin and former world indoor champion Daniel Caines are the only ones with the qualifying standard, but a host of others will pursue them on Sunday, with forgotten heroes such as Jamie Baulch, Ian Mackie and former European champion Iwan Thomas still dreaming of an Olympic return.

Men's long jump (8.19m)

Chris Tomlinson and Nathan Morgan have long promised a rivalry that would elevate this event in Britain and Morgan, who won their duel for gold in the Commonwealth Games, starts having met the qualifying standard which still evades Tomlinson. Both, it is to be hoped, will go over 8m along with Darren Ritchie.

Women's 400m (51.50sec)

A fine contest which ought to bode well for Britain's 400m relay hopes. European bronze medallist Lee McConnell roared back to the top of the UK rankings with victory in Padua last week but Donna Fraser has the qualifying mark, too. Helen Karagounis, Catherine Murphy and Christine Ohuruogu are contenders.
