"I think the gold and silver medals are probably accounted for but beyond that there are going to be quite a few athletes fighting it out for bronze. I'm in that group."
Macey posted a total of 7,842 points to win Hexham's International Meeting of Combined Events. That tally would not put him among the leading contenders in Athens but it only hints at what he is capable of.
The British No 1 made just one attempt at the long jump, shot putt, javelin and discus in order to safeguard a body that has suffered from over-exertion in the past.
But that policy will go out of the window next month as Macey seeks to confound those who predict that Paula Radcliffe will be Britain's only chance of an athletics medal at the Games.
"That score doesn't reflect what shape I'm in," said Macey. "I probably left 400 points out there on the track and that would make a lot of difference.
"I've got three weeks to get myself in peak condition and I'm going to be doing more intensive work from now on in."
