When Jurgen Klinsmann conned his usual penalty early in the second half, Germany were edging inevitably towards a fourth consecutive World Cup final. Then, with 15 minutes left, a Hristo Stoichkov free-kick levelled it. Three minutes later Iordan Letchkov's beautiful, gleaming pate bulleted home, establishing its owner alongside Geoff Hurst, Bobby Charlton and the rest in the pantheon of English football heroes.
