Levy fury as Convey fails to get permit

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy today slammed the decision to deny American international Bobby Convey a work permit as an "injustice" that must lead to an overhaul of the system.

Spurs' application for a permit for the DC United midfielder was rejected last week although he has played in 15 internationals for the US this year - more than any other American, including Manchester United's recent acquisition, goalkeeper Tim Howard.

Levy revealed he has been inundated with support from disappointed fans since the decision and promised the club would not let the matter rest.

He said: "We pulled out all the stops. We had the same legal advisors as United had for Howard. Glenn Hoddle went to the hearing and made it clear Bobby was a player he'd admired over a long period and who was going straight into the first-team squad.

"I firmly believe that an injustice has been done and urge all the bodies involved to review the system, as there are certainly several anomalies at present.

"Every club should be able to sign any player, from any country, provided they are over 18, thus protecting the academy system."
