Les Ferdinand today revealed the full details of the freak domestic accident that has put him out of the game for the rest of the season.

The Tottenham striker is the latest in a long line of footballers to have suffered embarrassing mishaps at home.

The 35-year-old fractured his wrist falling down stairs more than a week ago, but for some bizarre reason the injury was kept under wraps by his north London club.

It has been an injury-plagued season for the former England star - in fact it was his lingering Achilles problem which caused him to lose his balance and fall.

Ferdinand said: "I missed the Fulham game last month because of a niggling Achilles injury which I had aggravated in our previous game against Charlton. It had been bothering me for a few weeks so I decided to fly out with the Spurs doctor to Germany to see a specialist who has pioneered a new technique for this kind of injury which involves a series of injections into the Achilles.

"The treatment went really well but when I got home, disaster struck. I had been walking on the injury pretty gingerly for a while and I was coming down the stairs when I lost my footing, lost my grip on the banister and went crashing down to the bottom, fracturing my wrist.

"At first it didn't feel that serious. My kids were laughing at me and I was in stitches as well. But when I tried to get up, I realised I'd done some serious damage because the joint was bent sideways," Ferdinand told icons.com.

He went straight to hospital for an operation.

"They had to insert some pins and wire in the wrist to set things properly before giving me a plaster cast. I fractured my wrist in a couple of places, as well as dislocating it and I have to have the cast on for eight to 12 weeks," said Ferdinand.

Ferdinand is keeping up his fitness by cycling but has to concentrate on protecting the break for the next few weeks. "This has been one of my best seasons for Spurs in terms of goals and needless to say I'm gutted that it may be brought to a premature end.

"I am going back to the hospital today to see how the healing process is going and when I can expect to have the pins and wire removed.

"Hopefully, it won't be too long. I haven't given up hope of playing before the end of the season but I've also got to be realistic."
