Leeds target Palace boss Dowie

Iain Dowie has emerged as the man wanted by Leeds United to steer them straight back into the Premiership.

Shock choice Dowie, who is chasing a play-off place with Crystal Palace five months after taking over, has been identified as relegated Leeds' No 1 target as they face the prospect of a new £ 25million takeover.

Millionaire fan Steve Parkin, a 43-year-old haulage magnate from Leeds, hopes to take control at Elland Road and believes Dowie is the dynamic young manager who can transform the club's fortunes.

Leeds, who have debts of £50m despite a rescue in March, tumbled into the First Division on Sunday with a 4-1 defeat at Bolton.

Parkin would be loath to lose Eddie Gray, who stepped in as manager in November, and is anxious to keep him in a worthwhile post.

Leeds managing director David Richmond, who is expected to remain at the helm while other members of chairman Gerald Krasner's board step down, is also thought to favour Dowie.
