Lee Westwood runs into more trouble

Lee Westwood finished his opening round at the BMW PGA Championship with a blast at the new-look West Course and his mood didn't improve as he endured a nightmare start this morning.

Last night the world No3 was heavily criticial of the changes at Wentworth and in particular the radically altered par-five 18th, with its elevated green.

Today, though, it was the opening holes that were giving Westwood problems as he bogeyed the par-five first after hitting the bunker with his second shot and he had another bogey-five at the third.

A birdie at the par-five fourth gave Westwood (right) a brief respite but he then had back-to-back bogeys at the seventh and eighth before pulling a shot back at the ninth.

It left the Englishman two over at the turn and with an overall score of one over — seven behind the surprise first‑round leader Danny Willett.

With Willett among today's late starters it was Westwoood's playing partner, Luke Donald, who tried to set the pace as he closed the gap to the leader to just one. The Ryder Cup star played faultless golf up to the turn with his opening nine including birdies at the fourth and fifth.
