They won then but, after four defeats in five matches against Michael Vaughan's side, they badly need to stop the bleeding. At least Edgbaston is a homecoming of sorts for former Warwickshire captain Lara, but even there his leadership failed to impress as long ago as 1998.
It is the West Indies' awful run of 29 defeats in their last 39 away Tests that Lara refers to, however, when he says it is time to look forward rather than back.
"Our performance improved at Lord's after the first day and we can take a lot of positives to Edgbaston," he insisted. The West Indies should also field a more experienced attack, having belatedly recruited steady seamer Corey Collymore. But less than 72 hours after being well beaten at Lord's, they must raise their game considerably in the Midlands.
Meanwhile, an unchanged side is not an automatic choice for England. If the ball looks like swinging then James Anderson could be a better bet than Simon Jones.
