Lampard has Bayern scared

Bayern, four times the European champions, are one of the finest passing teams in the world but in the second half they simply wilted under the intensity of Chelsea's pressing game.

Whether Mourinho was communicating with his bench or not was largely immaterial as far as Lampard's contribution was concerned. The England midfielder needs little motivation and the tougher the opposition, the better he plays.

Banned from the bench by UEFA for the second leg too, it's comforting for Mourinho to know he can expect exactly the same level of commitment from Lampard in Munich next week.

As the despondent Bayern manager Felix Magath said: "We know Lampard is a class player and we have to hope that he's emptied his locker with those two goals."

After a confused and careless first half, it was Lampard who energised Chelsea in the second period. His industry and diligence frequently carried him into the Bayern penalty area, where he was able to profit from their inability to handle high balls. It's no surprise they are keen to sign Chelsea's 6ft 4in German central defender Robert Huth.

The other problem for Bayern is that their 35-year-old goalkeeper Oliver Kahn is clearly not the force he was once. He'd conceded only seven goals in eight Champions League matches until Chelsea made him look ordinary last night.

To be fair, though, there was nothing he could have done about the first of Chelsea's four goals. Bayern's failure to deal with a high ball after just five minutes presented Joe Cole with an opportunity that was going wide until the ball struck Lucio. Kahn, completely wrongfooted, had no chance of saving the deflected shot.

What happened next should ensure no complacency in Munich next week because Bayern responded with crisp possession football that demonstrated just how menacing they could be given the time and space.

But for all their good work in midfield, there was little sustained threat to the Chelsea goal. This may change next week when their Dutch goalscorer Roy Makaay is expected to return.

Bayern also missed Argentinian Martin Demichelis, an uncompromising figure who should also be back to add some defensive security in midfield for the second leg.

For a few moments after Bayern substitute Bastian Schweinsteiger had equalised in the 53rd minute, capitalising on goalkeeper Petr Cech's inability to hold Ze Roberto's drive, the Germans threatened to take control.

Lampard then struck in the 59th minute. Didier Drogba headed down a high ball that the former West Ham player guided beyond the dive of Kahn. Eleven minutes later, another long ball, this time from Claude Makelele, eluded the Bayern defence and fell to Lampard with his back to goal. His shot on the turn must rank among his finest goals this season.

We thought it was all over when Bayern failed to deal with a Damien Duff corner in the 81st minute. Kahn blocked Eidur Gudjohnsen's shot but the ball bounced out to Drogba, who drove it into the back of the net from close range.

Game, set and . . . well, not quite. Three minutes into added time, Ricardo Carvalho was judged to have brought down Ballack, who drove his penalty past Cech.

It was just enough to introduce an element of doubt to the second leg.

Chelsea's assistant manager Baltemar Brito, talking on Mourinho's behalf, said: "Our players were brilliant and showed they are good enough to beat anyone. We beat Barcelona, now we've put four goals past Bayern Munich."

Yes, Chelsea are well ahead of the schedule envisaged by Mourinho - and it's going to take something special to stop them now.
