"I didn't even get changed to play in the Croatia game in Dublin but the feedback from the coaches and the manager was that I looked sharp in training. I hadn't played in a big game for six months and they wanted to make sure I had not lost anything because of my injury."
Kiely completed the Everton game with a cut head from a collision with Duncan Ferguson. But his heroics counted for nothing as Jonatan Johansson's 58thminute headed goal was cancelled out by a Ferguson penalty before David Weir's late winner for the visitors.
Kiely said: "I was very pleased with the way I played and the saves I made, even though it felt a bit hollow because we lost. The only way I am going to get into the Ireland team is by producing performances like that for Charlton."
Gavin Peacock made an impressive second-half appearance. The 33-year-old son of Charlton's assistant manager Keith Peacock has a three-month loan deal from Queens Park Rangers and said: "This is a great chance for me. I'm delighted to be back in the Premiership with the team I used to support."
