Meanwhile, Dutch defender Mario Melchiot has revealed how manager Steve Bruce persuaded him to join Birmingham.

Melchiot became the fourth summer signing when he agreed to move to St Andrews after the arrivals of Emile Heskey, Muzzy Izzet and Julian Gray.

With Mikael Forssell already back at St Andrews after agreeing to extend his loan from Chelsea into a second season, Bruce then landed the fifth of his summer targets with the capture of Jesper Gronkjaer from Chelsea for £2.2m.

Melchiot said: "The way he spoke to me, the feeling he gave me, and the respect he showed to me all influenced my decision. I was not going to stay in England and then we spoke and he said 'just think about it'."

Bruce admitted signing both Melchiot, on a free transfer, and Gronkjaer had proved difficult as the players were in demand. Bruce said: "With Mario and with Jesper we have had various options. To be fair we have worked extremely hard on both of them. Both of them have had offers from all over Europe.

"Mario's a quality player who spent five years at Chelsea, so he has a Premier League pedigree and a wealth of experience and is a welcome addition to this club.

"We beat off a fair bit of competition from Sevilla and Atletico Madrid but he's decided his future is with us so we must be doing something right.

"To be fair to the club, of the five players we identified in the summer, we've managed to bring them all in and as a manager the one thing you do require is that backing.

"I think we've done terrific business in signing Mario.

"Along with the signing of Julian Gray we've used the Bosman ruling to our advantage and the signings we've made are quality and I'm sure they will make us stronger.

"With all the new players that have come in I would say that with them we are slowly progressing and I'm delighted for everybody concerned."
