Keeping Mum about my decision

A few weeks ago, it was driving me mad. What to do at the Olympics? The 1,500metres or the double of 1,500m and 800m. I couldn't get it off my mind because it's such a difficult decision. I was beginning to be infected by doubts about myself.

Yet now I think I've managed to blank it out of my mind as I go through some intensive training sessions here at Aphrodite Hills in Cyprus, the preparation base for Britain's endurance runners before the Games. People think I must have made my decision by now, but honestly I haven't. Not even my mum knows and she just laughs that I'll follow my dream in my own way and she'll just wait until she reads about it in the paper.

I have time on my side since I don't have to declare whether or not I'll do the 800m until the day before the heats, which take place a week on Friday, but I'm now in the positive frame of mind that tells me that if I carry on training the way I have been, the decision will take care of itself. I feel I am running well enough to reach the final in both events so if it is a dilemma, it is a happy dilemma.

The quandary boils down to this. I could hope to win a medal in the 800m, but won't know how much it will take out of me. Could it ruin my chances in the 1,500m? Or I could just go for the 1,500m and then regret afterwards that I didn't go in for the 800m? You don't want to live with regrets. For the moment, though, I'm not worrying because I'm sure I'm going to run well.

It's been nice and quiet at the camp - er, at least until Linford Christie, Darren Campbell and his training partners gate-crashed our base for endurance runners and turned the volume up. (Only joking, they've been a good laugh really.) This has only made me feel more confident because there's tremendous support out here, led by my great physio Alison Rose.

Physically, I'm absolutely fine at the moment - and I have to pinch myself almost to say that because after so many years being bogged down with injuries this season has felt almost too good to be true. But I take nothing for granted. The other week, I had a little calf niggle after a race in Madrid and immediately flew back to Britain to get it treated by Ali and the doc before a race in Birmingham. Knowing the medical team are here if anything goes wrong just gives me so much extra confidence.
