Keeper Jones is sure 'my way' suits him best

Geraint Jones has picked the brains of former England wicketkeeper Jack Russell to remove any threats to his position in the one-day international side.

Jones has established himself as England's first-choice keeper since making his Test debut eight months ago but his quickfire 66 from 46 balls in Wednesday's win against Zimbabwe in Harare was particularly timely as doubts were starting to emerge about his suitability for the 50-overs game.

Criticism levelled at Jones had tended to focus on his wicketkeeping rather than his batting, but it was his first half-century in 14 one-day internationals after replacing Chris Read and the first by an England keeper since Alec Stewart retired after the 2003 World Cup.

Speaking before the flight to Bulawayo for the back-to-back third and fourth games over the weekend, Jones said: "I like to think I am established in both the Test and one-day sides. I have not been in the team long, but I feel settled and able to express myself."

After a series of conversations with Russell, one of the great eccentrics behind the stumps but nonetheless a fine technician, Jones has decided to concentrate on what feels right rather than worry about textbook doctrines.

"I made a conscious decision halfway through last season to do it my way," Jones said. "Before that I was probably trying to please other people rather than myself.
