Jose: Premiership comes first for me

Jose Mourinho today revealed that he is willing to sacrifice the defence of his Champions League title in order to secure Chelsea's first Championship in 50 years.

Chelsea's head coach is hoping to be drawn against his old club Barcelona in today's second stage draw in Nyon, but would rather win a first Premiership title than a second successive Champions League crown.

Arsene Wenger has been driven to distraction by Arsenal's failure to conquer Europe but Mourinho is more concerned with domestic matters, starting with tomorrow's Premiership match against Norwich.

He said: "I'd prefer to win the Premiership to the Champions League. Maybe it's because I've already won the Champions League and haven't won the Premiership, but I think a club like Chelsea - who want to be great - should start by winning something in England.

"The Premiership is our target. The Champions League is a nice competition and, if you can progress step-by-step, then it's great. If you can reach the final even better and to win it would be perfect, amazing, but we have to concentrate on the English competition." Mourinho led Porto to an astonishing Champions League triumph last season and would like to be paired with another of his old clubs, Barcelona, in today's draw.

The Portuguese coach spent four years at the Nou Camp, working under Bobby Robson and Louis Van Gaal, before returning home to begin his managerial career with Benfica.

Barcelona are the form team in Europe with a nine-point lead at the top of La Liga and Mourinho feels that a meeting between the English and Spanish league leaders would be something to savour.
