Jordan's confident over Johnson deal

The mobile phone tycoon insists he is not surprised by the improvement and claims he always believed promotion was a realistic target once Dowie was in place. Jordan told SE25 magazine: "If I wasn't optimistic at the appointment of a new manager then there would have to be something wrong.

"I am by nature a half-full-glass person rather than a half-empty one so, while this business can be extremely demoralising sometimes, I am always thinking optimistically.

"The appointment of Iain was a considered one. Iain is no doubt a leader and a single-minded, determined man on a mission. Given that, along with my belief that we had a squad of players good enough to be challenging if managed properly, I felt my optimism was well founded. That remains the case."

Jordan has also started to back Dowie with money for new players. Defender Mikele Leigertwood joined from Wimbledon for £150,000 in February, while the club are in negotiations with Fulham over centre-back Mark Hudson. The chairman added: "We will be ever ambitious. I am here for success and Iain has come here for the same so we will have a playing squad reflective of that."

Jordan's only cause for concern has been the lack of support Palace fans have shown towards the new regime. Only 15,000 home fans watched their recent clash with Division One leaders Norwich.

He said: "I have been a little disappointed in the home support. The attendances at home this year have been the lowest since I bought the club. I understand that that's linked to performances, but since Iain's arrival there has been nothing but optimism."

Apart from Darren Powell (thigh), Palace are at full strength for the visit of Sunderland.
