Back to earth: Spieth returns to the grind of the PGA Tour to find that it's not always so easy

Jordan Spieth had a post Masters letdown, shooting a three-over-par 74 at the RBC Heritage to end his run of 16 straight rounds under par.

Spieth vowed his two-day celebration tour of New York after winning the green jacket on Sunday would not affect his focus but it was clear early on at Harbour Town that he was not at his best.

The 21-year-old was eight shots behind leaders Graeme McDowell and Matt Every and will need a significant improvement today to make his eighth consecutive cut. He said: “I’ve still got a good feeling about the second round. I feel like I got some swings in, got in somewhat of a rhythm and can at least go out and feel the shots. It was just an off day and it happens.”

McDowell, though, had a positive reversal of fortunes, having not shot lower than 71 in his previous 12 rounds.

The Northern Ireland golfer carded six birdies after an opening bogey and said: “It was great to feel comfortable out there, see my lines, hit my speeds and make a few putts.”
