Lawrence Dallaglio sat out Wasps league win at Newcastle on Saturday but travelled to the North East to join Wilkinson for yet another lap of honour - this time parading the World Cup.

"There was a sell-out 10,000 crowd to show just what kind of impact the World Cup has had," said Dallaglio. "It was the best reception I have ever had."

For Dallaglio, the focus now shifts to playing again after his week off and that means a Heineken Cup clash with Perpignan - 24 hours before the England players travel around central London in an open-topped bus to mark their World Cup triumph. They follow this with a trip to Buckingham Palace and a reception at Downing Street.

Dallaglio said: "I won't have any problem getting up for what will be a massive European test and resting for a week was definitely the best decision. Now, it's time to get back to work but I can assure you that the memories of the final and the reaction when we got back will never be forgotten."

London Wasps' season just gets better and better after yesterday's Powergen Cup quarter-final draw paired them with Birmingham-Solihull, the only National League club left in the competition.

Victory by 23-20 at Newcastle on Saturday took Wasps into second place in the Zurich Premiership and strengthened their campaign to successfully defend their title.

Now, the Cup draw has given them an easy route to the mid-March semi-finals, in which they will meet either London Irish or Newcastle. The other quarterfinals, to be played on the last weekend in February, feature Sale v Saracens and Leeds v Bath.

Warren Gatland, the Wasps director of rugby, fancied his team's domestic Cup chances even before yesterday's draw. It is success in the Heineken Cup, however, that represents his chief target for the season, and this Sunday's initial group clash with last year's beaten finalists Perpignan will provide a clear indication of Wasps' European credentials.

"You have to break the season down into segments, and then peak at the right times," said Gatland, who will play Dallaglio and Josh Lewsey for the first time after resting them at Newcastle.
