Jol suffers dodgy goal deja vu

While Chelsea were bemoaning the faulty vision of a linesman on Tuesday night, Martin Jol was sitting at home in London suffering from a case of deja vu.

The Dutchman is still haunted by a goal-line gaffe - one even more blatant than Luis Garcia's dubious winner - which could ultimately sink Tottenham's UEFA Cup bid.

When Roy Carroll fumbled Pedro Mendes's speculative lob at Old Trafford in January, almost 68,000 people in the stadium saw the ball cross the line - with the notable exception of linesman Rob Lewis.

Had the goal counted, Spurs would have won and now be in a commanding position in the battle for seventh place in the Premiership.

As things stand, they are still in the hunt for European qualification going into tomorrow's key match with rivals Middlesbrough, but that does not stop reflections on what might have been.

Jol said: "The solution is so easy. Use cameras. All you have to do is ask the fourth official to watch a replay and tell the referee it's a goal or not.
