Jol: Keane and Defoe leave us short

Mido's introduction was certainly necessary following a first half dominated by Bryan Robson's relegation-threatened team.

Thomas Gaardsoe squandered a fantastic chance to put them ahead before Zoltan Gera curled in a spectacular opener. Richard Chaplow then saw his goalbound shot brilliantly saved by Paul Robinson to keep the score at 1-0.

Shortly after Mido's arrival, Keane slotted the equaliser before Reto Ziegler and Andy Reid both came close with long-range attempts to find a winner.

Reid reckons the whole team's performance was under-par in the first half and claims Spurs should be capable of functioning effectively, even if Keane and Defoe are their two main strikers.

He said: "They are two quality players and as long as we keep the ball on the ground and play football, then I don't think it's too much of a problem. They are good enough to adapt and we are a good enough team to adapt. If we can't, then we need to improve."

Given Spurs' strong home record - which has seen them win seven of their last 10 league games at White Hart Lane - Reid admitted it was a case of points dropped in the bid for a UEFA Cup spot.

He said: "We are disappointed. It's a home game and we feel we can beat anybody at home. But we have to look at the positives. In the second half, we played some good football. Mido made a difference, they had some powerful lads at the back and he came on and matched them, which helped us."

Spurs remain in seventh place, though they could have lost ground to their fellow European challengers by the time they meet Arsenal on Monday night.

Kanoute, Mido and Michael Dawson, who bruised his leg last night, are all fitness concerns ahead of the trip to Highbury.
