Johnson at the ready for Eriksson's call

Glen Johnson will almost certainly be given the chance to make his England debut in the friendly against Croatia at Ipswich on Wednesday.

The 18-year-old right-back, who cost Chelsea £6million from West Ham, could be promoted from the Under-21 squad because Manchester United's Gary Neville is ruled out with injury.

Sven-Goran Eriksson's first squad of the season, which he names tomorrow, will reflect the changes in the make-up of Chelsea's squad since Roman Abramovich bought the club.

Heavily reliant on foreign players for most of the last decade, Chelsea suddenly have five Englishmen who will feature as Eriksson continues his preparations for next month's European Championship double header against Macedonia and Liechtenstein.

The uncapped Johnson could line up with four Stamford Bridge team-mates at Portman Road next week - Wayne Bridge (12 caps), Frank Lampard (11), Joe Cole (10) and John Terry, who made his debut as a substitute in the friendly against Serbia and Montenegro at Leicester in June.

England captain David Beckham, who missed that game and the subsequent qualifier against Slovakia, will be back from Madrid to lead the side.

Injury will rule out Everton's Wayne Rooney.
