Johns' hopes dashed in run

Andrew Johns saw his medal bid evaporate in the Athens heat on the punishing 10-kilometre road race section of the men's triathlon at the Vouliagmeni Centre on the coast south of Athens.

Peterborough born Johns, who always eats two Mars Bars before an event, caught flu in the build up to the 2000 Games in Sydney, but was in great shape going into this competition and was placed fifth after the swimming and cycling sections. However, he could only finish 16th behind gold medal winner Hamish Carter, of New Zealand, with Tim Don 18th.

It was the 40km bike ride that put Johns into contention as he kept pace with a breakaway group. But he had little in reserve for the run.
