Jimmy: Show some steel

Chelsea's players were challenged today by Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink to show some character after their embarrassing Champions League defeat last night.

Chelsea lost their first match out of 10 this season when they were beaten 2-0 at home by Besiktas and the Dutchman, who replaced Adrian Mutu at half-time, said: "Yes, people have been waiting for us to slip up but now we will see what is going to happen. We will see how we bounce back how much character we have."

"I am one of the pioneers of the team, with 22 others. We are working very hard and we are trying to make it work.

"Everyone wants to play from the start but Besiktas defended very well and had good organisation. We knew they were good but we didn't expect to lose at home."

Claudio Ranieri made five changes from the team which beat Aston Villa on Saturday but refused to blame the defeat on his tinkering.

The Chelsea coach said: "It is easy to second guess after the match but I did what I thought was right. I still feel good. My players have good character and they will show the right reaction at Middlesbrough on Sunday."
