James cuts Lomu down to size

James Simpson-Daniel feared giant New Zealand wing Jonah Lomu would "put me into the third row of the stand" on his Twickenham debut.

Instead the lightweight Gloucester wing took care of Lomu so successfully that he looks certain to win a place on England's tour to Argentina next month when manager Clive Woodward names his 30-man squad tomorrow.

Simpson-Daniel, conceding five inches in height and almost six stone in weight in his head to head with Lomu, used a dummy pass he had last tried at school to wrong-foot Lomu before outpacing him for one of the seven tries England scored in their 53-29 win over the Barbarians.

Simpson-Daniel said: "I don't know why I did it, it seemed the right thing, and I didn't think too much about it. I tried it at school once or twice and it worked but I did feel Jonah might have put me in the third row of the stand."

The win should see London Irish full back Michael Horak and Harlequins lock Alex Codling among the uncapped players nominated for Argentina where England will play one Test on June 22.

Leicester, meanwhile, became the first side to defend the Heineken Cup with their 15-9 victory over Munster at Cardiff and Sale followed it with a 25-22 win over Pontypridd in the second-tier Parker Pen Shield at Oxford.
