It won't be a lottery for speedy Libranno

Libranno can continue to add to Ollie McDowell's good fortune by winning the Group Two Tanqueray Richmond Stakes at Glorious Goodwood tomorrow.

The owner-breeder won over £7million on the Lottery in the early 1990s, which helped fund his involvement in racing.

McDowell, whose distant cousin is US Open golf winner Graeme McDowell, initially bought a few racehorses but Libranno, winner of the July Stakes at Newmarket, looks to be his best.

And in another slice of good fortune for the owner-breeder, he ended up keeping the exciting two-year-old colt after failing to sell him as a yearling.

McDowell, whose uncle Jack owned the 1947 Grand National winner Caughoo, said: "I paid 50,000 guineas for Scarteen Fox, who won two races and was then favourite for the Group One Racing Post Trophy at Doncaster in 1999, only to let me down badly.

"However, I sold him to Hong Kong for 180,000gns the following year, so I did alright.

"I then got interested in breeding and 'stole' a mare called Annabelle Ja for 18,000gns. She produced Libranno and I sent him to the yearling sales hoping to make a little profit but he did not reach his reserve so I brought him home and sent him to be trained by Richard Hannon.
