But then Barry Everitt hit back with a penalty, prompting Irish coach Gary Gold to praise the way his team had battled after losing Hardwick and Hatley.
"A big part of our game plan was to take them on in the scrummage," said Gold. "To lose our starting props was a blow but we showed tremendous courage, with a replacement hooker in Adrian Flavin acting as an emergency prop and Doug Wheatley doing brilliantly on what was the opposite side of the scrum for him.
"You can't coach that sort of courage, yet it's a bittersweet feeling for me because we still made too many errors in a game we really wanted to win."
