Ingram sets his sights on York

A bargain buy colt, who caused a 40-1 shock at Leicester yesterday, could fly the flag for Epsom at the big York meeting next week.

Boule D'Or, trained by Roger Ingram, and a rank outsider for the opening maiden on the card at the Midlands venue, slammed the odds-on Maclean, owned by the Queen and trained by Sir Michael Stoute, by a length and a half. As a result, he could turn out in the prestigious seven-furlong Acomb Stakes at the Ebor fixture tomorrow week.

Ingram, who is renowned for pulling off some notable racecourse gambles, went on to clinch a 409-1 double in the following selling race with 9-1 chance Mistral Sky, who proved that the handler's small string at Wendover Stables is in top form.

Ingram said: "It was quite a tale how I got Boule D'Or. Kieren Fallon, who ironically was on Maclean yesterday, recommended a filly to me and I went down to see her at Marlborough.

"They were asking a bit too much for her, but showed us a colt instead which was Boule D'Or for whom we offered 32,000 guineas but were told it was not enough.

"Later, at the Newmarket Breeze-Up sales, we bought him for 10,000 guineas, so that was some kind of result which made his debut win even sweeter. The Acomb is a Listed event, and I've never won one of those. Boule D'Or had been working very well, but when I got to the races I was told that the royal horse was not expected to get beat. Well, we held that one easily when he came at us and I feel we have got a really good horse to go to market with."
