Improving Chargers will take some stopping

The American football season is starting to take shape with the St Louis Rams finally showing that their defence is almost as awesome as their offence.

Several surprise teams are, however, suddenly emerging as serious Super Bowl contenders.

Chief among the latter category is San Diego.

The Chargers were the laughing stock of the NFL last year losing 15 games, but have turned matters around in brilliant style winning three out of their first four games. Indeed, they were unlucky to go down to a rejuvenated Cleveland last week.

This Sunday, they visit New England and should be able to give the Patriots a three-point start and a beating. Take the 10-11 generally available.

Denver should also return to winning form when they visit Seattle. A seven-point start for the Seahawks is not as stiff as it appears on paper, while Carolina may shock New Orleans with a juicy 5.5 point handicap advantage.

I gave too much respect to our Sports Editor by failing to follow through my first thoughts and tipping Sheffield United to beat his beloved Canaries a fortnight ago.

I won't make that mistake this Saturday when Norwich visit Gillingham. With Marlon King in cracking form, I expect a three-point haul for the Gills at a mouth-watering 6-4 with Stanley.
