Teaching them to get to grips with the likes of Sri Lanka's Muttiah Muralitharan, Pakistan's Saqlain Mushtaq and India's Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh has been Fletcher's greatest triumph over the past few years.
But he has also worked hard, with others, on developing some new fast bowlers to follow in the footsteps of Darren Gough and Andrew Caddick.
At Old Trafford, on a pitch offering precious little encouragement and without the injured Gough or Caddick, the young strikeforce of Matthew Hoggard, Andrew Flintoff and Alex Tudor did Fletcher proud.
"I don't think I've seen an England side play better," said Hussain. "To bowl them out twice on what was more like a sub-continent wicket after losing Caddick was unbelievable."
Hussain knew that Hoggard and Flintoff would battle away, having seen them produce some sterling performances in India before Christmas.
But man of the match Tudor, who finished the Test with seven wickets, probably gave England's management most satisfaction.
Hussain said: "Alex stepped up to the plate and showed what he could do."
The skipper and his men have made no bones about enjoying the football team's success but English cricket badly needed to grab its slice of glory when the opportunity came along.
What a way to do it. By dismissing Sri Lanka for 308 yesterday, the home side left themselves 36 balls to score the 50 runs for victory. Marcus Trescothick and Michael Vaughan required only 30 deliveries to the noisy delight of a small, but excited crowd.
As with Sven's men in Japan, the next challenge is never far away.
India's multi-talented squad arrives in London today for the triangular limited-overs tournament followed by four Tests against England.
Selectors Hussain, Fletcher, David Graveney and Geoff Miller meet tonight to finalise their one-day party.
Mark Butcher (knee) and Caddick (side) are certain non-starters. Tudor and Essex's in-form all-rounder Ronnie Irani are among the candidates to step forward.
Probable one-day squad: M Trescothick, N Knight, N Hussain (capt), G Thorpe, M Vaughan, A Stewart (wkt), P Collingwood, R Irani, A Flintoff, C White, A Tudor, A Giles, D Gough, J Kirtley, M Hoggard.
