Hughes gives Newcastle the edge

Aaron Hughes's late winner against 1860 Munich last night was enough to give Newcastle a priceless advantage to take back to St James'Park.

Newcastle had surrendered a two-goal lead in the first leg of their InterToto Cup semi-final before the Northern Ireland international headed home in the 83rd minute.

The visitors drew first blood after just 10 minutes when Peruvian Nolberto Solano produced a fine solo goal. He burst forward into the box, side-stepping the challenge of covering defender Vidar Riseth, before expertly clipping the ball over advancing goalkeeper Simon Jentsch.

Stung by the early setback, 1860 battled back and after 16 minutes the Newcastle defence were guilty of ball watching as captain Thomas Hassler chipped into the path of Ned Zelic, but his fierce half-volley flew just wide of the post.
