Howard not surprised about Chelsea start

After impressing on the pre-season tour of the United States, the former Metrostars goalkeeper has confirmed his position as United's first-choice, beating off the challenge of Barthez and Roy Carroll.

However, he admitted the transition from Major League Soccer has not been as smooth as it may appear and there is still much work ahead before he regards himself as the finished article.

He said: "It hasn't been easy. In fact, it has been quite difficult at times. The difference in standard is huge and I am learning all the time. I am still quite young and the more games I play, the better I will get, although I am quite happy with the way it has gone so far."

Ferguson is sure to make changes this weekend, with captain Roy Keane and top scorer Ruud van Nistelrooy certain to return providing they overcome their respective hamstring and back complaints.

Gary Neville should also slot in at rightback, with brother Phil restored to central midfield. Ferguson has yet to decide who to play in the wider positions, with Cristiano Ronaldo, Darren Fletcher and Quinton Fortune all in contention.
