Houllier remains king of the Kop

'Perhaps he'll have to focus on the things that are most important, because his contribution before, in terms of hours spent caring and worrying about this club, was absolutely immense.

'Every waking hour, and half his sleeping hours, were devoted to getting the best out of the team. He's completely dedicated to the cause and needs to find a way of having periods where he can relax. It's easier said than done, because driving Liverpool to the top is an all-consuming passion with him.

'He simply never switches off, but he is going to have to.

'He'll find it difficult. Mentally, he'll continue to think about things non-stop, because that's how he is. But we'll be very conscious of supporting him in that respect and ensuring he does not overdo things.

'It'll be a case of sitting down with him and talking over all aspects of the job because his health is of paramount importance.' Houllier, however, will not be returning full-time until the New Year.

Parry said: 'I still estimate January or February for normal service to be resumed, though he could be in evidence here sooner, maybe just after Christmas. It's up to him how he does it, though I don't think he'll want too many fanfares. He'll just turn up at Anfield or Melwood one day and get on with it.

'When he does feel up to coming back, I'm certain it'll be long-term.

'We see him being here for years to come, and I believe he does as well. He loves the job and likes everything about Liverpool as a place and club. He also has a great affinity with the supporters, which counts for a lot.

'When the Kop held up a mosaic displaying his initials before the Manchester United game, it was their initiative.

'One or two of them contacted me and suggested it, and Gerard said how much it moved him.

'It's difficult to put a precise time-scale on how long he will stay, but everyone here sincerely hopes we're talking about many years to come with the manager.

'There's every reason for believing that'll be the case, because the fans love him, he's building a new era of Liverpool success and, above all, enjoying it.

'Long may that continue, and I'm sure it will, providing we keep an eye on him. We'll be encouraging him to take a breather every now and then.'
