Earlier this week there was no hint of her decision to quit.
Speaking at a launch for her shoe sponsors she said: "I certainly haven't retired from athletics - I was up training at 6.45 this morning. The hamstring is much better now and my focus is on Helsinki. But I'll only go if I know I've a good chance of winning."
Earlier this week she was honoured by journalists across the world when she was voted sportswoman of the year for 2004.
Holmes, who won gold medals at Athens in the 800metres and 1,500m, came first in a poll held by the International Association of the Sporting Press.
Meanwhile, Kelly Sotherton broke the UK indoor 100m hurdles record to mark the opening of a new sports complex at Brunel University in style.
The Olympic heptathlon bronze medallist, running the event for the first time indoors, clocked 13.52sec to beat Sally Gunnell's best of
13.71sec set 20 years ago. She then ran the 100m just 10 minutes later and won in 11.93sec.
Sotherton is in training for the Gotzis International combined events meeting in Austria at the end of next month.
