Holloway looks to Europe for squad boost

Ian Holloway revealed today that Queens Park Rangers are scouring the whole of Europe for new talent. Yesterday the Championship club announced they have agreed a fee, believed to be around £750,000, for Middlesbrough defender Andrew Davies, which would be their biggest transfer payout for six years.

Manager Holloway says Davies' signing could be the first of many as he prepares the club for a sustained assault on the playoffs next season. "What's important for me now is taking the club forward. Next year is going to be vital," he said.

"In the summer we have to get a decent squad together that can cope with everything because we won't be able to bring players in on loan when the new transfer window comes into effect.

"I might have to go and see a Spaniard soon and go to Germany to see another defender. It is very exciting.

"They have given me some names. It's just getting the time to go over there."

Holloway spent a weekend in Monaco recently meeting investors from the consortiums Wanlock and Barnaby, who ploughed £1.7m in to the club last autumn. "It was terrific," said Holloway. "The minute I met the people in Monaco I knew they were proper business people who wanted the same thing for the club as me.

"I'm going to need a decent-sized squad but I'm looking for quality. It's always the quality that matters. For instance, I'm going to need at least three good goalkeepers next season."
