Hoddle: Kanoute won't be last buy

Spurs goalkeeper Kasey Keller reckons Kanoute's arrival will provide the muscle that has been lacking from their attack since the departure of Les Ferdinand last January.

The 6ft 3in striker began his career at French club Lyon before initially making a loan switch to Upton Park in March 2000. He joined the Hammers in May of the same year and has since scored 33 goals in 92 appearances.

Keller told Standard Sport: "I'm really excited about Kanoute coming to Spurs. We could use some size and speed up front.

"It was obvious in the second half of last season how much we missed Les's presence up front. Freddie is the type of player who can give us that muscle up there. He will be a very good addition."

But while Kanoute will add some much needed steel to the Spurs front line, the club have put their move for Chinese striker Qu Bo on hold. Bo was recently injured while playing for China's Olympic team and, although he arrived at the club last month, Spurs decided to postpone plans for a work permit application until he regains full fitness.

Hoddle is acutely aware of the need for a ball-winning midfielder after watching his side go down 2-0 to PSV Eindhoven in a friendly at White Hart Lane yesterday.

PSV skipper Mark van Bommel ran the show for the visitors and the player has set his sights on a move to the Premiership - possibly with Spurs.

Hoddle failed in his bid to land Charlton's Scott Parker last month, but Van Bommel would be the perfect answer to his midfield problems. Van Bommel, who scored a stunning volley for Holland in their victory over England at White Hart Lane two years ago, was linked with a move to Spurs last week.

The Dutch international insists that he would be interested in a move to the club even though Spurs cannot offer him European football.

He said: "White Hart Lane is one of my favourite grounds and it's a possibility I would even go there to play for Spurs. They are a great club with a great tradition.

"It's my dream to play in The Premiership. I'm sure the chance will come sooner rather than later. Champions League football is not necessary for me to come and play in England. The chance to play in front of packed stadiums with some of the world's best players is what excites me."

Hoddle's men found themselves outplayed throughout by the Dutch side as Ji Sung Park and Arjen Robben scored either side of half-time. Spurs' poor performance sparked a chorus of boos from fans at the end but Hoddle was more concerned with the fitness of defenders King and Richards and a calf injury to midfielder Simon Davies.

Richards is due to begin training again today, but Hoddle admitted both defenders are now major doubts for the opening game of the season at Birmingham.

Neither have figured in the club's pre-season build-up and while there is still time for them to regain their fitness, Hoddle accepts they are short of match practice.

He said: "It is too early to say whether they will be fit for the start of the season, but at this moment in time they have not played any games. So it is 50-50 for them at the present time."

Meanwhile, midfielder Darren Anderton collected a hamstring injury during yesterday's friendly but, contrary to reports, has not signed a further extension to his contract.

Anderton has just 12 months remaining on his current deal and Portsmouth are continuing to show an interest in signing him.
