Hinshelwood in at Brighton

Brighton boss Martin Hinshelwood takes charge of his team for the first time in a friendly at Worthing tonight - with all the talk at the game certain to surround the mystery World Cup coach who could have become their new manager.

Hinshelwood, Brighton's director of youth football, was last night promoted to first-team manager but his appointment was overshadowed by chairman Dick Knight's revelation that he had interviewed and turned down a top international manager, believed to be Cameroon's German coach Winfried Schafer.

He was one of seven men Knight held talks with before rewarding Hinshelwood for 15 years' service to Brighton with a two-year contract for the job.

Knight refused to name other candidates but said: "One of the managers on the shortlist was, and still is, an international team coach. I made my first approach to him during the World Cup and then met him in Spain after the World Cup."
