Henman only participated at the tournament this week because Thomas Johansson pulled out with an injury.
He ploughed his way through a tough field, defeating the likes of world No 1 Andy Roddick, Wimbledon champion Roger Federer, three-times French Open champion Gustavo Kuerten and French hero Sebastien Grosjean on his way to the title.
"Certainly to beat the calibre of players I did obviously speaks for itself," said Henman. " But certainly then to get through to a final, I really did feel the emphasis was on me.
"It was a great test of my mental strength and my character to make sure I went out there and I played the same way."
